“What Schizophrenia Sounds Like”

For the last couple of weeks I have been looking up information about the mental illness, schizophrenia for a research project for my psychology class. During my research I found an interesting project that some scientists had put together called, “What Schizophrenia Sounds Like.” After interviewing many people with this illness the scientists compiled a short clip of what a schizophrenic might hear during an episode, or just day to day. I listened to this from my laptop speakers, not the recommended head phone approach (Which I’m glad that I did!) When I pressed play on this sound clip I instantly got chills and had to turn down the volume before proceeding. Honestly, it creeped me out to the point where I had to turn something funny on the TV to keep from weirding myself out. This sound clip really is interesting. Have a listen!

Check out this video from Scott Manley, tracing thirty years of asteroid discovery and the deployment of new and more sensitive instruments to find them. From the green main belt asteroids, to the yellow dots that cross Venus’ orbit, to the red that come near our own orbit … space has a lot of stuff in it. Nearly 600,000 objects known at the latest update.

But that doesn’t mean we’re in any special danger. As these objects, most very tiny, travel through their wonky, often angled orbits, they travel through a volume of 2,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 cubic km, or enough to fit a trillion Earths. Space may have a lot of stuff in it, but it’s also very big.

Rest easy. We’re watching the skies.

Of course, that precise amount of time happens to be 46,138,562,195, 008,110,600,774,753,760, 087,749,172,181,189,607,929, 628,058,548,517, 099,604,563,033,706,075 years, but work with me here.

It’s an ambitious exploration of the “million monkeys” problem, which says that if you gave a million monkeys unlimited coffee and allowed them to bang randomly on typewriters, they would eventually produce all the works of Shakespeare, or Harry Potter, or anyone else for that matter. It’s a lesson in infinity.

This photo installation by Jeff Thompson is only 15 x 10 grayscale pixels, but as it shuffles through images it will most certainly create something that resembles meaning. I like how he relates it to a “time machine”, with its ability to create things that haven’t even been seen yet.

While only an art project, it relates to larger questions of the universe. Like why, out of all the infinite arrangements of matter that could be envisioned over infinite time scales, does this one exist, here and now? It’s mind-bending stuff, and worth considering.
